What the service is

A consumer unit upgrade is the full replacement of your fuse board with an 18th Edition metal-cased unit, wired so every final circuit has its own RCBO (individual overcurrent + earth-leakage protection). Existing tails, meter connections and earthing arrangements are inspected and, where needed, brought up to current standards at the same time.

Who it's for

Homeowners in older properties, buyers whose survey has flagged an outdated board, landlords who've had an EICR come back with a C2 or C3 on the consumer unit, and anyone about to install an EV charger, heat pump or solar system that needs the board upgraded first.

When it's needed

If your board is any of the following: wooden-backed, part-metal-part-plastic, protected by rewireable fuses, has a single RCD covering the whole house, or has trip switches that don't clearly separate circuits. Also if an EICR has returned a code C1, C2 or FI against the consumer unit or main protective devices.

Why professional help matters

Old boards fail quietly. A rewireable-fuse board provides no earth-leakage (RCD) protection, meaning a fault to earth in a kitchen appliance or garden tool can be fatal before the fuse ever notices. A single-RCD board means one leaking freezer can trip half the house — including the fridge — while you're at work. Individual RCBOs solve both problems at once.

Common mistakes to avoid

• ×Adding a single RCD 'shower unit' next to an old board as a workaround — this doesn't bring the installation up to standard.
• ×Choosing the cheapest quote without checking whether tails, earthing and bonding are being upgraded at the same time.
• ×Buying a consumer unit online and asking an electrician to fit it — most refuse, and rightly, because they can't guarantee the manufacturer or the components.
• ×Assuming a board 'looks fine' because it hasn't tripped — a wooden-backed board can be seconds away from a fault and still test as working.

The Board Itself

A metal-cased 18th Edition Amendment 2 consumer unit — typically 8, 10, 12 or 14 way — sized to the number of circuits in the property plus reasonable spares. Brands used are mainstream UK manufacturers (Hager, Wylex, Fusebox, Contactum) with genuine RCBOs, not third-party clones.

RCBO On Every Circuit

Rather than one or two RCDs shared between half the house, every final circuit gets its own RCBO. This gives each circuit both overcurrent (MCB) and earth-leakage (RCD) protection, and means one faulty appliance only trips its own circuit — nothing else.

Surge Protection (SPD)

A Type 2 Surge Protective Device is fitted where appropriate, guarding sensitive electronics — routers, TVs, boilers, EV chargers, PV inverters — from transient overvoltages caused by nearby lightning strikes or switching on the grid.

Tails, Earthing & Bonding

Meter tails are checked for correct rating (usually 25mm²), the main earthing conductor is checked against the earthing arrangement (TN-S, TN-C-S or TT), and main protective bonding to incoming gas and water is verified. Anything sub-standard is flagged, priced and upgraded with your agreement.

Standard vs. Bigger Boards

Standard 8-circuit installs start at £750. Larger boards (10–14 way), TT-earthed properties, boards with a metering upgrade, and installs requiring extensive re-labelling or extra bonding are quoted individually after a look at the property.

Landlord & Renovation Scenarios

For letting properties the upgrade is timed around tenant changeovers where possible. For renovations the board is often relocated (e.g. from under the stairs into a utility) as part of the wider works — quoted alongside the rewire or refit.
